Lanvin Fall/Winter 2012

Though there are still a few days left in PFW, Alber Elbaz’s lively Lanvin 10th Anniversary may have been the week’s coup de grâce. With A-Listers in the audience and a slew of runway divas on his catwalk Alber threw what could go down as the event of the season. Frosted birthday cakes, glittering chandeliers, a live performance by Pink Martini and of course a collection full of the sensual shapes that made him a favorite of industry insiders, luxury buyers and real women alike.
The mix of body conscious pieces played like a remixed version of Elbaz’ key ideas. You had the bold shots of color, the nipped waists accentuated with curved peplums, voluminous coats, metallic brocade, rich hued furs and so many other delights to marvel at. We may know what to expect from Lanvin, but we’re never bored with it. The consistency of vision and uncompromising quality are part of the allure. In the musical chairs world of fashion, where designers shuffle in and out of luxury houses day after day, many talents have trouble finding their footing. Elbaz has not only defined the look of his house, he’s enriched it; here’s to 10 more incredible years.

Franca Sozzani Defends Haute Mess, Jennifer Lopez May Headline the Met Gala

Those stories and more in our daily news roundup.
  • Franca Sozzani defended Vogue Italia's recent Haute Mess spread against accusations that it was racist, saying that it was not her intention to cause controversy with images of candy bars pasted into models' hairdos. "A racist image, I really do not understand," she said. "I went through the pages so many times. Like when we did the Black Issue, everybody said that we did that on purpose because Obama was the person chosen to go to the White House, and if you just think one second, not more than one second, you can see that to make a magazine like what we did for the Black Issue, it takes six months [to do]. … What do you answer? They don't know what it means to work at a magazine. That's it." [The Cut]
  • Menswear designer Simon Spurr left his eponymous fashion label last week without explanation. "At this moment, I'm not at liberty to say anything about what's gone on," he stated in an email. His unexpected departure came just a week after being nominated for the CFDA's menswear designer of the year award. [WWD]
  • Despite a statement from Vogue to the contrary, rumors have persisted that current cover girl Jennifer Lopez will be performing at the Met Gala this May. She's been a regular attendee of the event in the past, and with the added attention of being on the magazine's cover this Spring, the idea that she'll perform makes sense. Wait and see. All the Best Looks From Last Night's amfAR Gala

Last night's amfAR gala to kick off Fall 2012 Fashion Week had it all. There were superstars (Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker), icons (Carine Roitfeld, Roberto Cavalli), and way too many supermodels to count — Heidi Klum, Cindy Crawford, Molly Sims, Erin Heatherton, and Anja Rubik, just to name a few. Cavalli, who was honored at the event, offered insight into his newfound passion: social media. "I discovered I love to write. It's a new emotion," the designer explained. "I love to watch when people write me back, it's such love." See images from the evening — which raised $1.4 million for AIDS research, prevention, and education — here.
